Whether I am beginning a computer generated piece of art or planning to use a traditional medium, my approach is the same. I compose everything with a series of pencil sketches. Before I sit down to the computer or my drawing table, I have a vivid image in my mind of the finished piece. Also, I've learned not to be too quick to change an unexpected effect, some of the nicest effects are merely "happy accidents".
The drawings below, were done for a catalog, they are "Hard Line Illustrations". Rendered on a vellum paper with a technical pen, using a variety of screens which were shifted and cut to create the desired effects. The art is reduced significantly from the original size, yet they can be reduced again to an incredibly small size and the modeling will remain crisp and clean when printed. This is the unique characteristic of this type of illustration.
